Preparing For Your Surgery
Our surgical coordinators have put together information to help you prepare for your surgery.
Location Of Your Surgery
With the exception of Bariatric Surgery, our physicians perform surgery on the campus of Chestnut Hill Hospital, located at 8835 Germantown Avenue. Parking is available by valet and the parking garage. The 2nd level of the garage has an enclosed bridge into the hospital. Surgery is performed at one of four locations within the hospital:
- Main Operating Room Suite
- Endoscopy Suite
- Surgery Center
- Women's Center
Arranging Your Surgery
Once you and your physician have decided on a procedure and signed your consent, you will meet with the surgical coordinator to:
- Decide upon a surgery date
- Coordinate this date with the Chestnut Hill Hospital Surgery Center
- Review inpatient or outpatient pre-operative instructions
- Set up home nursing visits if needed
We will contact you insurance company for pre-approval of the surgery. You will be responsible for obtaining referrals from your primary care doctor if needed (one for surgeon and one for the hospital).
Pre-Admission Testing
If your surgery requires sedation (anesthesia), you will be contacted to schedule a pre-op visit at Chestnut Hill Hospital. Pre-Admission Testing is to ensure there are no underlying conditions that are more important than your procedure. You will need to bring the following:
- All insurance cards
- Photo Identification
- Referrals (if applicable)
- List of medications
Report to the outpatient registration department on the ground floor of the Hospital the day of this appointment.
You will be interviewed by the pre-op nurse and they will do all necessary tests that your surgeon ordered. There is no fasting involved with this appointment. If you have not heard from them one week before your scheduled surgery, please call
Based upon your medical history and findings from your Pre-Admission Testing, you may be required to have a physical exam or medical clearance by your primary care physician or specialist. If so, this should be completed within three business days of your scheduled procedure.
Please check with your employer or short-term disability company prior to surgery to see what paperwork will be needed for completion. (There is a fee for all forms.)
Patient's Financial Responsibility
Not all insurance plans cover the entire cost of a procedure. Please contact your insurance company to determine what your financial obligation may be. Any financial responsibility must be paid on the day services are rendered.
- Make arrangements for an escort home after discharge before the procedure
- Identify one contact person selected in family for updates; Cell Phones are prohibited
- Please do not bring any valuables
- Please keep eyeglasses, contact lenses and hearing aids in protective cases
- Check with the appropriate hospital for visitation hours
You will get a call from the surgery center staff regarding your arrival time, where to report and what to bring (except for Endoscopy Cases). If you have not heard from the hospital by 3:30pm, please call your surgeon's office. You should not eat or drink anything after midnight the day before your surgery (unless instructed otherwise).
If you need to cancel and/or reschedule your surgery please call your surgeon's office.
At the time you are directed, you will go to one of the following:
- Patients undergoing an outpatient procedure should report to the Surgical Center located on the ground floor of the Hospital's medical office building.
- Patients being admitted the day of surgery should report to AM Admissions located on the ground floor of the hospital.
- Patients undergoing Colonoscopy and/or EGD should report to outpatient registration one hour prior to your scheduled procedure.
- Discharge instructions, pertaining to your surgery, will be given to you before you leave the hospital.
- If home health care is needed, such as for a dressing change, this will be arranged before you leave.
- You should have a Post-Op visit at the office 7-10 days after surgery, unless your surgeon instructs you otherwise. Please call our office to schedule this.
- If any questions arise after surgery, please do not hesitate to call us. We always have a surgeon on call after office hours and on the weekends.
